Lijiang is the city that everyone in our troop were looking forward to. Famed for Lijiang Ancient Town or known in Mandarin as Lìjiāng Gǔ Chéng, the city has a long history dated more than 800 years ago. Built in the late Song and early Yuan Dynasties, Lijiang Old Town that cascades down from Lion Mountain on the west was formed from a network of hundreds streets and alleys alongside numerous streams that crisscross the city.

Designated in UNESCO World Heritage List, the weather in Lijiang Old Town in colder as this ancient city sits at elevation 2400 meters (8000 feet), compares with Kunming at 1900 meters or 6200 feet. Aside from temperature, altitude sickness is commonly reported among visitors. According to our guide’s past experience, some people may not get accustomed to Lijiang’s altitude, hence may immediately develop symptoms such as headache, dizziness and nauseous upon arrival. To prevent, she advised us to keep our body hydrated, take enough rest and not to engage in any strenuous activity.

We finally arrived in Lijiang town close to 5pm and our hotel - Grand Lijiang is a four-story building, located
right next to the Old Town of Lijiang; excellent location, albeit an old hotel.
Ancient stone bridge still serves the public
After a short rest, we took a quick walk nearby the Old Town. The section where we stayed is an old town, whereby one can find enormous streams, waterways and bridges. This probably explains why the water wheel is an icon of Lijang!
Restaurants to emjoy Naxi cuisine
The premise that is preserved as Lijiang Old Town is an open walk. Boasting Naxi architectures, strips of rustic houses had been all converted to shops. Easy to get lost here since the shops are typically sandwiched between small streams and appear similar to each other. These shops are mainly selling scarf and Pashima shawl, silver products, Chinese traditional medicine. Besides the retail trading, there is a sstreet that is elegantly-lit with red lanterns, houses mostly pubs and restaurants.

I leave you with my evening photos taken in the Old Town of Lijiang. If time permits, do not miss Dongba dances and savor the taste of Naxi.
