If you are in Malaysia/Singapore, 'nasi kandar' is not something foreign to you. In Malaysia, we frequented these restaurants pretty often, at times once a week to at least once a month. 'Nasi Kandar' is a two-word in Malay that is called upon a popular cuisine in Malaysia. 'Nasi' means 'rice' whilst 'Kandar' is a verb which literally translated as 'balancing on shoulder'.
Indian, Chinese and Vegetarian - ALL in One
In the old days, this dish was sold by street vendors. Their operation was run by balancing a pole on shoulder with two huge rice meals containers. I guess this dish gains popularity as time passed and as early as 1990s, 'Nasi Kandar' chain restaurants were mushrooming in Malaysia. Typically, 'Nasi Kandar' refers to a platter of plain/spiced rice with cooked dishes like curry chicken, fish, squibs, shrimps. Everything are placed
on a plate and typically is poured with mixture of curry sauces/gravy which gives the platter an irresistible
aroma. And of course, they are delicious!
Fresh spices and adjustable 'hot' index
In Austin, there is nowhere that we know of to savor the taste of Nasi Kandar but the closest similarity is Indian cuisine. To satisfy our craving, we explored the Indian cuisine at Masala Wok located north of Austin city, along I-35. It serves relatively a good array of Indian cuisine like curry, masala, korma, dal, tandoori, kabob and briyani. What surprise me is they also serve chow mein and chop suey and a few choices of kid's meal. And something for vegans too as most entrees are also available in vegetarian version.
Casual Indian dining
Despite the restaurant runs in self-service style (save on tipping), the host-staff is very friendly. She made
round and ask for feedback. On top of that, there are 3 rating of hot/spicy index: mild, medium or extreme which is a good means to accommodate folks of low tolerance of hot stuff.

Check out what were on our table.
For drinks, we opted fro Mango Lassi. Wow..it was perfect! This is one of the best mango lassi I have ever tasted.
Mango Lassi
Coconut Curry Chicken tempered with mustard seeds and curry leaves, cooked in coconut curry sauce and served with rice and nan.
Korma Masala
Lamb cooked with mixed vegetable in korma sauce and served with rice & nan. Blazing Masala Noodles
Hot and spicy noodles with Masala Wok's signature sauce, fried with chopped vegetables and chicken.
Masala Quesadillas for kiddo
Nan bread stuffed with cheese.

In a sentence, I like this place. Both food and service are great!
