Daorae Korean BBQ Restaurant is newly established in Penang, yet successfully attracts a huge number of Penangites to attempt Korean cuisine. A typical serving of meat may cost between RM20 to 30, but most diners love to this place and a number of customers have returned, again and again! Check out what I had on my first visit: Seaweed soup - My friend told me that seaweed soup is typically served on a Korean's birthday. ![]() The side dishes (or banchan) that kept flowing in non-stop. Pickled Chinese cabbage, pickled cucumber, fresh bean sprouts, fried spinach with sprinkled sesame seeds, fruits salad, jelly fish & crab stick. ![]() Main course as the highlight and the grilling 'show' time. These were performed by the server staff. The round stainless steel cover lid was removed and a pot of smokeless amber was placed into the slot. After placing a stainless steel grill plate, a tiny bowl of fresh garlic was heated up. Each table is equipped with a sliding chute to suck or absorb the smoke from grill. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Began with garlic and onion, followed by the marinated pork neck. Once the meat was well-cooked, he cut them into bite sizes and flipped them over. Closely watched to ensure these meats were just perfectly barbecued! Then, we moved on to marinated chicken or Yang-nyum Dak-gal-bi which was grilled in similar manner. ![]() If you look helpless, the server would 'educate' you the traditional style of eating Korean BBQ meats. Place a piece of fresh lettuce on a small plate/bowl. Pick a piece of meat, dip into the sweet sauce then dunk into ssamjang (a spicy paste made of doenjang mixed with gochujang) and lay on the lettuce. Add garlic and another condiment called pajori (spicy scallion salad) and wrap them before putting into mouth. ![]() ![]() Besides eating and having a great time, I had learned a lot about Korean cuisine!
