Perak Tong in Ipoh - Malaysia Top 10 Cave Temple PDF Print E-mail

Driving along North-South Highway in Malaysia between the city of Penang and KL provides ample nature treats. A sight to behold is the jagged limestone mountains near Ipoh. When my imagination goes wild, this majestic view at times takes me to Guilin (China) and Halong Bay (Vietnam).

If you ever wonder to explore one of these limestone caves, I guess a visit to one of the cave temples in Ipoh is worthy.

Located along Jalan Kuala Kangsar in Ipoh, Perak Cave Temple or  fondly known as Perak Tong (Tong means cavern in Chinese/Mandarin lingo) is the top 5 most visited temple caves in Ipoh. Residing at the foothill of Gunung Tasik, this temple cavern was established in 1926 by a Chong-couple hailed from Jiao-Ling province in China.

Our recent food hunting trip to Ipoh offered us a chance to visit Perak Cave Temple. We arrived after lunch on a public holiday weekend but to our surprise, parking was a breeze. According to our host, Sam Poh Tong attracts more tourists comparatively hence this perhaps explains the lower figures here.

A flight of stairs up slope took us to reach the door of the cavern. For stroller or wheelchair users, the cavern is accessible via the paved slope from left end.

Guarded by 3 loyal buddies (dogs), a golden Buddha greeted us as we made our way into the cave. Besides the main shrine where the giant Buddha is seated, there are a few corners behind serving as altars to perform sacred offerings and prayers. Unlike a typical cavern, the walls are smooth and whitish taking the original shade from limestone I guess, showcasing beautiful arts of murals painting and Chinese calligraphy.

Shielding beneath the millions old limestone, it is pretty cooling to stay inside the cave. For adventurous visitors that look forward to conquer this cave, give yourself a shot to climb up and triumph over 450 steps. To begin, head on the staircase that leads to a bright spot above the cave. Aside from fresh air and panoramic view of northern Ipoh that await you, a small pavilion and beautiful nature are also rewarding.
