If you long for a good, sweaty run to burn off some calories and get an adrenaline rush, Taman Jajar or fondly known as Linear Park in George Town Penang offers a shady place to exercise for the public. As the name explains, the park is running in line with Air Itam River in Batu Gantung neighborhood serves as a great recreational place for families with children too.



One of the least explored urban parks in town, Taman Jajar is located off Jalan York adjacent to Sri York Condominiums. Not as large as Penang Municipal Park nor Botanical Garden, it offers a jogging track along a tree-lined path, tennis court, sepak takraw court, table tennis, public community hall and a children's playground. Ample car park welcomes you at all time.

The small river that flows adjacent wins out with its captivating views of water and river banks meandering alongside the park. For photographers that are searching for picturesque sights of century-old rain trees in rows, this spot certainly makes your finger clicking non-stop. To folks that hailed from Taiping, it perhaps reminds you of the scenic Taiping Lake, of course in much a smaller scale .

Walk alongside the river towards south-west, a charming brick arch bridge awaits to take one across to Suffolk House that is located on the opposite land. Claimed that it was originally owned by Francis Light (the so-called founder of Penang), Suffolk House was restored in 2007 and today, it serves as a posh dining place - a real place to splurge!


There are two options to reach Taman Jajar or Linear Park. First, the conventional driving route from Jalan York then, a turn into Halaman York followed by Medan York at where Sri York Condo is located. Alternatively, drive along Jalan Air Itam on the direction to KOMTAR, take a left turn right before Methodist Boys School. After you see Malaysia German Society, take a right at the fork, drive to the end of the road and Suffolk House is ahead. Cross the bridge to reach the park.
