A cup of coffee in Ipoh is a must! Thanks to Old Town White Coffee branding, today everyone knows that Ipoh is the best city in Malaysia to sip a cuppa of aromatic white coffee!

Unlike the folks in other places, Ipoh's residents seldom go for the 3-in-1 sachet of the white coffee on supermarket aisle. What they are fond of doing is heading downtown to spoil themselves at the kopitiams near Kinta Heights 20 story-flat! The popular white coffee rendezvous that most talk about refers to the crossed road where Jalan Bandar Timah intersects with Persiaran Bijeh Timah (refer to Google Map below) with three pioneers here. Sun Yuan Loong and Sun Yuan Foong stands side by side like twins but they are actually a couple combining their 'last' name - "Loong Foong" or "Dragon & Phoenix" are auspicious mythical beings in Chinese literature. And Nam Heong - the founder of Old Town White Coffee lies across of the road. This piece of precious information was what I heard from our hospitable host - an Ipoh born and bred boy! He added that his parents visit these rustic coffee shops for high tea (tea time snacks) on weekends as routine.

He further shared that the first establishment that offered white coffee was not Nam Heong that bags the fame of Old Town White Coffee but this traditional kopitiam where we were sipping our coffee and enjoying our toasts! Hearsay the younger generation of Nam Heong is farsighted, demonstrated entrepreneurship thus expanded the business. To date, they dominate a share in every malls and upmarket areas featuring local flavor's niche.A sight of typical Chinese kopitiam in Ipoh
Going back to Sun Yuan Foong or Sin Yun Hong (as hung above on Chinese-business wooden plaque), it opens for breakfast, lunch and tea until 5pm. Besides serving their signature white coffee, there are a list of bread-egg combo snacks for their patrons to choose from. From pouched egg on toasted bread to bread with kaya/butter on top of western twist that includes sausages, ham and burger buns, these are made available throughout the day. During lunch hours, they pamper visitors with more food such as noodles, rice and dishes of economical variety. When we were there on Sunday afternoon, Sun Yuan Loong was closed otherwise we would spoil ourselves with second cup of white coffee!Old town White coffee shop menu for toast and eggChinese business wooden plaque
How is white coffee at Sun Yuan Foong? I asked for a hot. Served in a classical kopitiam porcelain mug with green flowers motif, the color was lighter than black coffee. It was rich, creamy, aromatic with a tinge of bitter end yet perfectly sweetened.

With so much information to digest, guess what? We forgot to capture the most hunted image here - a cup of white coffee! Make sure you do that :)
