Eating is undoubtedly one of the favorite activities to past time in Penang. Reflected by the countless local stalls along streets and alleys, Penang's hawker food is gradually taking over the 'hot spot' in the modern malls.
Magic Kitchen - Resident food court at 1st Avenue
Magic Kitchen - that's the name given to the resident food court at 1st Avenue City Mall in George Town of Penang. Situated at Level 4 adjacent to Sakae Sushi and opposite Carrefour, the recent established Magic Kitchen showcases the flavors from Penang's hawker variety in addition to Peranakan (coming soon), Japanese, Thai, Vegetarian, Taiwanese and Western twist.
Mee Rebus - Penang's local delight
Stir fried water convulus (spinach) served with steamed rice
After Christmas mass in George Town, we looked forward for a good lunch at 1st Avenue. With a little one to serve, our aim was searching for a baby friendly spot so that all of us could have our meals together on Christmas! To our surprise and delight, Magic Kitchen provides a high chair and we instantaneously stuck to this magical venue.
Penang food court ambience in mall - hawker food
First of all that struck us was the images of Chinese sweet soup stall or fondly known as 'Tong Sui' from Mat Toh Yau Dessert House. Despite the fact desserts are served in the end of meal, our mind took us to approach Mat Toh Yau in order to resolve our sugar craving. The second stall from the public corridor, Mat Toh Yau serves almost 10 variations of Tong Sui. Offering in hot or cold by your choices, each of them looks equally appealing. The pictures displayed were very well captured, indeed capturing our hearts. We went for Barley, Bean curd & Gingko, Red Bean soup and Leng Chee Kang. They cost between RM2 to 4.50 for a small bowl each.
Mat Toh Yau - decent dessert house next to Japanese
After settled with desserts, we opted for mains from local operators. Stir-fried water spinach (kangkung) sambal with white rice and Mee Rebus were our experiment. Not to my liking, the Mee Rebus was too hot and the serving was way too small for its price. I knew they had just started a couple months ago, hopefully time will help them to improve in order to stay on.
Leng Chee Kang - Chinese sweet dessert
Above all, it was an exciting experience to explore Magic Kitchen's Tong Sui from Mat Toh Yau. A decent taste and great ingredients, would be greater if the price is slightly reduced.
