One of the luxuries of residing on the isle of Penang is opportunity to enjoy the fresh and affordable seafood includes crustaceans, molluscs and fish. Teluk Kumbar, Batu Maung and Teluk Bahang are among the most popular spots for Penangites to enjoy sumptuous seafood dinner. One of the Saturdays, we decided to dine by a sandy beach at the south of Penang - Teluk Kumbar Good Friend Seafood. In Mandarin, it is fondly known as ‘Hao Yu’ (好友) which literally translated as 'Good Friend'.  Nowadays the staff are easily recognizable as they are wearing the company t-shirts. As we raised our hand for assistance, a staff quickly came by and promptly taking our order. Good service!  We arrived early, before half past six in the evening. Our first mission was to catch the glimpse of sunset. The sights of sea and its horizon are breathtaking! With the fore ground of fishing boats, jetty and beaches, this place is also good for photography while enjoying our seafood dinner.  We were too excited to fill up our table and opted for 5 dishes for 2 persons. Mmm… sound a bit glutton but we just couldn’t help. Everything seems good on our neighbor’s tables  ! First dish to arrive was clams or fondly known among Penangites as 'lala'. They were cooked with fiery chilies (chili padi or bird’s eye chili pepper) and some local spices. They looked so appealing especially when the aroma get into the air.  For carbohydrate, we took Teochew Noodles instead of rice. The Teochew Noodles was stir-fried with octopus, fish cake, prawns and bean sprouts. It looked plain and simple but tasted great! We love it.  Next on our table was the highlight of all - a pair of plain grilled crabs. The waitress will ask on what is your preference unless there is not many in stock. There are usually two choices which is meat-crab (usually male) or roe-crab (usually female). And we ordered one of each and that pair cost us RM 33.50! This crab experience was rather crappy. We were not too happy as they did not meet our expectation and worth the money paid! However, as usual I still enjoyed messing with these little crabs and get my fingers' dirty!    We picked small green cabbage for fiber and vitamins. Plain stir-fried vegetable, the leaves of these small cabbages were very crunchy! The long waited final dish was steamed Red Snapper in Thai-style. The whole fish was garnished with plenty of shallots and Thai sauce. The snapper was fresh as the white flesh was sticky when we chewed. This is a good indication I learned from a local fish farmer to verify freshness when the fish is served!  Overall, we had fun enjoying the evening beach view and fanned by gentle cooling sea breezes. We took a walk by the shore after the dinner. Talked about nothing as we strolled along the beaches. Indeed a romantic evening for both of us! Dining there?
