 Singapore originated from the Malay name 'Singapura' that in Sanskrits means 'Lion City'. Dubbed as 'Switzerland' in Asia, this city-state in South East Asia is one of the world's most prosperous countries. Ranked number two after Monaco as the most densely populated country in the world, Singapore or the formerly known as 'Temasek' (means 'Sea Town' in Javanese) is home to more than 5 million people with 40% are expats! Prior to European settlement, the island was a fishing village inhabited by mainly Malays and indigenous people. In 1819, Stamford Raffles of British East India Company established a trading post on the island and made it a port along the spice route besides playing important role as commercial and military centers of the British Empire in South East Asia. Today, Port of Singapore is the busiest port in the world surpassing Rotterdam and Hong Kong owing to sophisticated infrastructure and skilled workforce.
