Things To Do In Singapore On A Budget

A striking city-state of Asia, it is no secret that traveling in Singapore is costly compares to its neighbors but if you get a list of things to do in Singapore on a budget, you get to enjoy without breaking the bank. Hard to believe, there are in fact an enormous free things to do in Singapore, check out below.
Merlion Park and Esplanade Theaters in Singapore
1. Mythical Merlion
Hey, you are in Singapore! There is no better place to be than snapping a picture of 'I was here' at Merlion Park. Strange, unique or both, Merlion is an image of lion head possessing a fish tail, constructed by Singapore Tourism as the icon of Singapore back in 1970s. Overlooking waterfront, the park is not huge but free!

2. Esplanade Theaters
Unlikely you are going to miss this huge bug's eye if you are at Merlion Park. Often referred as 'durian' or the stinky spiky fruit by the locals, Esplanade has plenty to offer especially on weekends. You might be lucky to catch free live performances on the waterfront promenade. Plan ahead and browse for the events online.

Getting there? A short stroll from MRT City Hall or MRT Raffles Place.

3. Riverside Walk - Boat Quay, Clarke Quay & Robertson Quay
A well-known spot for a splurge on fine dining and expensive beers, but taking a walking tour on the pedestrian boardwalk by the river doesn't cost even a penny! Start from Fullerton Hotel, step on the rustic Cavenagh Bridge - the oldest bridge and the only suspension bridge across Singapore River! Admire Raffles statue and stunning bronze sculptures tagged with storyboards describing the life in the past. Best to do in evening as the al fresco and restaurants lit up, attracting expat crowd. Hang on the river bank to watch bumboats taking tourists load passing by, make up to things to do in Singapore at night.

4. Singapore Botanic Gardens
You would be surprised that there are so much things to see! Pack your lunch from food court or supermarket, go for picnic after a long walk around this massive park! Admission is free and no soul will chase you away even you spend a whole day roaming.

5. Free Museums

Things To Do In Singapore On A Budget when Everything Else Needs to Pay

6. Sentosa Island
Every fantastic stuff on this largest playground in Asia, you have to pay but not the beaches! Strolling on the imported sand and taking the tram ride are free. Take Sentosa Express - the fastest, most conveniance and most inexpensive transportation to reach Sentosa. Make sure you stop at Imbiah Lookout and Waterfront Station. The gardens near Merlion, evening light show, newly constructed Lake of Dream and its surroundings near Universal Studio are open for public access at no cost.

Getting there? Sentosa Station every few minutes (S$3) from Vivo City Mall Level 3.

7. Window Shopping at Vivo City Mall
After a long day at Sentosa, cool off in the largest city mall - Vivo City. Decent hawker meals at Food Republic are inexpensive. Sky Park is just a door away, a fun place for kids. Get outdoor to sniff the fresh air, looking at waterfront or take a walk along the bay.

8. Wander Chinatown
Never compare with other neighborhoods, Singapore Chinatown certainly has a character. The place to greet elder generations, as they watch friendly match of Chinese chess under the sun or manning stalls in Chinatown Complex. Great place to shop for inexpensive souvenirs, spot local's delicacy and try their confectioneries. Tour along Telok Ayer Street, be enthralled by the legacy of temple, shrine and mosque from the past. Visit Buddha Tooth Relic Temple & Museum if you have time, free admission so it certainly completes your things to do in Singapore on a budget.

9. Explore Little India
The locals go to Little India for food, and so do the foreigners if you are looking for things to do in Singapore on a budget :) As much as what Chinatown could offer, Little India is equally chaotic. Spill out stalls on five-foot way blasting Bollywood tunes as you pass flower garlands decorating the stalls. Religious attractions includes Sri Veeramakaliamman Temple built in 1855 which survived through bombing during WWII and Abdul Gaffoor Mosque that was completed in late 1920s. Not to miss - banana leaf rice and curry!

10. Eat hawker food
Like it or not, this is the best way to survive on shoes string budget in Singapore unless you opt for fast food which do not reward you to experience the unique local's palette. If you are wary to try street vendors, go for food courts in shopping malls but they are slightly more expensive and less authentic!

That's true. Nowadays, the opportunity to experience the beauty of Singapore is not limited to the wealthy people. With the emergence of cheaper travel solutions to the location, going to Singapore is considered as one of the touring options especially for European excursionists.

Hi nicely written piece of info there. It took me a while to find free things to do in Singapore but there is actually quite a lot to see for the budget traveler.
I agree with you about the hawker centers they do provide great food at low costs, much better than fast food chains.
