Nicknamed as 'Taipei's backyard', Yangmingshan National Park (陽明山國家公園) is one of the best spots for Taiwanese to view cherry blossom in their homeland.  On contrary, not many foreign visitors are aware of this fact including myself until a happy coincidence happened during my crisp trip to Taipei last spring.

Bell-shaped or Formosan Cherry Blossoms
Sits in the district of Beitou, Yangmingshan National Park (NP) is located less than 20 km north of Taipei city. Easily accessible by public transportation, the fastest option to reach Yangmingshan NP is via MRT (Danshui Line). Alight at Beitou MRT Station before transferring to Minibus S9 (小九) or Bus 230 at the bus stop of Beitou MRT Station. Alternatively, you may alight at New Beitou MRT Station if you do not mind standing all the way in a Minibus S9 through the winding roads ascending the mountain to Yangmingshan NP.
The stretch between Yangmingshan Bus Station & Yangming Park
To our surprise, a sizable area of Yangmingshan NP is inhabited unlike what we imagine of the national parks in United States whereby they are usually preserved with limited human activities.

Novice or expert, everyone is after the cherry blossoms
Guess nothing is best to describe our experience than we are carrying a lucky charm. While sitting in the minibus going uphill to Yangmingshan, we overheard a conservation among the elderly folks describing that
more than 100 cherry trees had started blooming and flowering. Wow! Perfect timing for cherry blossoms and we were ecstatic!

Formosan cherry blossoms or scientifically known as Prunus campanulata is a native cherry trees in Taiwan. Abundance in Yangmingshan NP, cherry blossoms season usually arrives in late February through middle March, earlier than Sakura in Tokyo owing to the fact that Taiwan enjoys a subtropical climate. It is the rule of nature that cherry trees are flowering earlier at hotter places.

If you are after the cherry blossoms,  alight at Yangmingshan Bus Station. From there, travel on foot to Yangming Park. There are quite a number of cherry trees on both sides of the road that would oblige you to stop for photography session! If you do not have the luxury of time, proceed straight to Yangming Park near Visitor Center or Flower Clock. Dozens of cherry trees color the atmosphere, showcasing the highlight of Yangming Park in spring! With a bit of patience to explore in vastness of Yangming Park, you might be on the luck to gaze Japanese Sakura too namely Kasumizakura, Osima and Yoshino cherry blossoms.
