If you are relying on public transport to visit the main attractions of Yangmingshan National Park (NP), expect to travel on foot more than a fair bit. Claimed by many as a must-see attraction, we picked Zhuzihu (竹子湖) as our last destination before bidding farewell to Yangmingshan.
Walking adventure at Zhuzihu begins here
A short while after Hutian Bridge, Hutian Elementary School is on your right
From Yangmingshan Bus Station, we boarded Bus 108 and alighted near Hutian Bridge, Zhuzihu Road since this bus does not run on the route of Zhuzihu basin. For visitor with a deep pocket, you may get a cab and it can take you directly to the white calla lily farm. From Hutian Bridge, stroll along the main road until you reach a fork junction. Either road will take you back as this is an encircled route of the valley. Left junction is a nearer option taking you to Dinghu while right leads to Shuiwei.

Produces from nearby farms
Elevated 650 meters above sea level, Zhuzihu is located amidst of Mt Datun, Mt Qixing and Mt Xianguanyin. Formerly a lava-dammed lake formed by volcanic eruption, Zhuzihu was planted with a huge number of Meng-zong Bamboo (Phyllostachys pubescens) after the lake water receded. With Han-Chinese settlement took place, they called this spot Zhuzihu. Literally, 'Zhuzi' means 'Bamboo' and 'Hu' is 'Lake'.
The fertile land of Zhuzihu, used to be a lake
As you progress along the main road, there are plenty of restaurants offering places to unwind and having drinks/meals. Occasionally, one may spot the umbrella-shaded stalls selling fresh calla lilies, vegetables and fruits. Famed for scenic calla lilies farms, they are clustered mainly at Dinghu area. The peak season of blooming white calla lilies is usually in March through May. It is worth to stroll a distance and venture deep into the basin area encircling the flower fields. The view of lush vegetation against the misty clouds is breathtaking.

Do not miss 'Donghu Fir Forest' which we stumbled upon by coincidental. A spot with luxurious tall firs and green canopy resulting tiny spots of sunshine sneaking in, falling upon the pebbled carpet. This explains the appeal as favorite spot for bridal photography.
