![]() Also known as The Golden Mount Temple to the English speaking folks, Wat Saket is a sacred spot to catch the spectacular skyline of Bangkok city! In a quiet nature, hiking over 300 steps on a spiral concrete staircase, it provides an open area with minimal crowd to see the superb aerial view of metropolitan at various height. The sight of skyscrapers contrasting against blue sky is breathtaking and blending with the blow of breezy wind, the hike seems easy! ![]() ![]() Putting aside the scenery, the history of Wat Saket started in 1792. King Rama I performed the royal bathing here after he became the new ruler of the kingdom. During the reign of King Rama III, the construction of Wat Saket was initiated on this artificial hill and completed during the reign of King Rama IV (a.k.a. King Mongkut) in 1865. In 1897, Buddha's relics was brought from Grand Palace to be deposited on the stupa/chedi atop and the enshrining ceremony was performed by King Rama V (a.k.a. King Chulalongkorn). Second visit by His Majesty was in 1899 to deposit the Buddha's relic received from India. Thanks to the historical significance and royal engagement, Wat Saket has continued to receive royal sponsorship to support the construction of religious building and monk's quarter at the foot hill. ![]() ![]() Besides historical value, Wat Saket is unique as it was used as cremation and burial site as well. As one walks into the temple's precinct (after passing the fences), there are some cemetery sites on the 'wall' of the hill and more to be encountered along the stairs towards temple atop. ![]() Congratulations if you have made to the top! This is where Buddha images are enshrined. To reach the iconic structure of golden chedi, look for the staircase sign post and it takes you to the roof top to gaze the masterpiece of golden chedi! ![]() Entrance is free and The Golden Mount Temple is open daily from 8 am to 5 pm. It can be reached from Saphan Fa pier by foot. For navigation, always look upon the direction of golden chedi and sign post (in English!). Best to ignore the touts as they tend to tell you 'Temple is closed today' so that they could chauffeur you to somewhere else Direction: |
