Summer in Texas is the best time to get out into the sun and hit the water! Runs from Kerr County to San Antonio Bay on the Gulf of Mexico, Guadaluape River is a popular destination for water recreational activities in Texas Hill Country. Recreational users often flood the stretch of upper Guadaluape River during spring and summer for tubing, canoeing, kayaking and rafting.
Hot summer at Guadaluape River State Park
Longing for water, we explored Guadaluape River State Park on one of the summer weekends. Located near Spring Branch, Guadaluape State Park is about 30 miles from New Braunfels. Holding 9-mile stretch of Guadaluape River, the park offers about 4-mile water frontage to visitors. Camping, fishing, hiking, canoeing, swimming, tubing and bird watching are among the outdoor thrills that bring most folks to flock here.
Waterfront and 'beach' area
Honey Creek State Natural Area that sits adjacent to Guadaluape River State Park is protected natural area.
Accessible by scheduled guided walk on Saturdays' morning, it offers a breathtaking sight of majestic sycamores and bald cypress trees laced with Spanish moss blending with Columbine and maidenhair ferns twine among the rocks against the water of Guadaluape River!

Shady spots are occupied by picnickers
We arrived about noon and headed directly to the picnic area located north of the park. Most picnic tables near the parking bay were occupied, thus we descended to the river banks. Huge bald cypress trees lining up along Guadaluape River banks offers natural shelter to picnickers. We were lucky to occupy a shady corner, a spot to enjoy our lunch on lawn chairs while gazing at the awesome surrounding. The natural view here is outstanding with limestone bluff across the river, evident the power of water erosion. Water here is shallow, reaching knee level of an average man. Despite of that, it is wise to walk in the water with a pair of aqua shoes or sandals since there are plenty of pebbles.
Calm water of Guadaluape River
If one is into tubing, bring your own gear. Head upstream and let the water floats you freely along the scenic Guadaluape River! Trust me, it is fun and you are never going to get enough of it!
